Susan Perry, M.S.
2011 Recipient, The American Council on Education’s
Donna Shavlik Award
The ACE’s Donna Shavlik Award honors an individual whose leadership demonstrates a sustained commitment to advancing women in higher education through actions or initiatives enhancing women’s leadership and career development, campus climate, and mentoring of women at both the state and national levels. We’re pleased that this year Susan Perry, the 2011 recipient of the Donna Shavlik Award, joins our conference as our keynote speaker. Throughout her career she has mentored, supported, and encouraged the careers of many women in higher education. In every position she has ever held, she has been a change agent, innovating with every tool at her disposal to improve higher education. We’re delighted to have her kick off our day of thinking about leading in the 21st century.
Susan Perry (in photo, left, with Jamilla Jabari) has been an information services professional since 1964. During her career she has served as the dean of libraries and media services at The Evergreen State College; chief librarian of the J. Henry Meyer Memorial Library at Stanford University; director of the departmental systems group at the Stanford University Data Center; and CIO and college librarian at Mount Holyoke College. For ten years, she served as a senior advisor on libraries and information services to the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. During that time, she was a consultant to NITLE; staff to and then Dean of the Frye Leadership Institute; and Interim Director of CLIR. She also helped to build a consortium for the 23 US accredited American Universities Abroad, AMICAL.
Perry currently serves on the Board of Visitors of UNC’s School of Information and Library Science (SILS), and in 2005 she received the UNC SILS Distinguished Alumni Award. In March 2011, the American Council on Education (ACE) presented her with the Donna Shavlik Award in recognition of her lifelong commitment to advancing women’s issues in higher education.
