Associate Dean for Student Academic Excellence – School of Arts and Sciences Hunter College, The City University of New York The School of Arts and Sciences, Hunter College, is seeking an Associate Dean who will work with the Dean and the faculty to provide a rich liberal arts education for Hunter undergraduates. Reporting to the Dean, the Associate Dean for Student Academic Excellence will lead, plan, and implement programs and special initiatives that encourage intellectual growth and academic success, increase retention and degree-completion, and expand the possibilities for liberal arts students during and after their undergraduate experience. The Associate Dean will have the following responsibilities:

• Oversee and continuously assess the operation of programs for freshman and transfer students to engage them in academic life, foster habits of study, increase retention, and reduce attrition; • Cooperate and promote seamless collaborations with the staff of the Vice President for Student Affairs on such issues as advising, registration, awards and scholarships;

• Collaborate with the Office of the President, Office of the Provost and Vice President of Student Affairs on special student initiatives;

• Collaborate with directors of honors programs and special honors cohorts, in the development of special academic programs and meaningful academic experiences for these students, including the implementation of learning community blocks;

• Advise the dean on curricular needs, course availability, students’ progress through requirements, and serve on College-wide committees working to improve course availability and improve on registration processes;

• Oversee pre-professional programs including Pre-law, Pre-health, and pre-business and assist directors, advisors, and faculty to promote student interest in, preparation for, and admission to graduate and professional education;

• Facilitate and increase Hunter students’ success in competition for prestigious scholarships;

• Cooperate with faculty and administrators of programs and initiatives for undergraduate enrichment (including academic student organizations and clubs) and undergraduate research programs;

• Respond appropriately and effectively to student academic concerns and complaints;

• Assist the dean with other efforts as assigned.

The successful candidate for this administrative position will have a PhD or other appropriate terminal degree in a liberal arts discipline housed in the School of Arts and Sciences. He or she will have demonstrated a commitment to liberal arts education, will have had experience as a faculty member and/or academic administrator, and will possess a record of promoting student achievement. She or he will have a record of working effectively with diverse students and faculty, will be familiar with traditional and contemporary issues in undergraduate education, and will be inventive, self-starting, and a good communicator.
